Cam led the old man aside, doing his best not to wrinkle his nose at the stench or stare at the tattered shirt and furs that passed for his clothing.

“How long have you been out here? It’s 200 kilometers to the nearest settlement.”

“Was a part of the Church of Peace,” the old man said in a voice creaking but understandable. “Moved up north to Alaska to get away from the violence and practice our ways. During the war, when I heard there’d be forced conscription, I took to the wilderness with my wife.”

“The war? Which war?”

“The great war, with the Kaiser,” said the old man. “A people what never done anything to harm us, and there was a chance we’d have to betray our sacred vows to the Lord. Lived up here ever since.”

Cam took a step backwards, supporting himself on one of the great pine trees. If the old man was telling the truth, he’d been living along in the taiga for over fifty years. “You don’t even know that you’ve crossed the border?”

“Reckoned I might have, but the Canadians was conscriptin’ too so I figured it didn’t much matter.” A sigh. “My wife’d often say she thought we were movin’ toward the Canada aide before she died.”

“Hey, what’s the holdup?” Jeanette from Cam’s crew called from behind him.

Cam waved her off with a curt gesture. “That’s a long time to be alone,” he said.

“Alone? No, I ain’t alone. I got the Lord, son. The lord and six children.”

Dr. Noah Sexton won a number of prominent physics prizes for his work on astrophysical X-ray sources. A PhD at 18, with his earliest major paper published at 20 and his first major award at 23, he was for a time regarded as an up-and-coming enfant terrible in the discipline, headed for a major academic or research position.

This changed, and rather forcefully, with his paper on “Nchimsi Background Radiation” penned at 27. Dr. Sexton argued that a certain type of background radiation, undetectable by all but the most sensitive instruments, contained a record of future events. The first such article, which was published but later withdrawn by the Canadian Journal of High Energy Particle Physics, proposed that the effect was on a quantum scale and only detectable under strict laboratory conditions.

His work went unchallenged for a year until a research team from Cambridge attempted to reproduce Sexton’s results. They found no evidence of the effects he described, serious problems with his procedure, and inexplicable errors in his mathematics (which was complex enough that the CJHEP had not bothered to check it). Sexton’s assertion that the name “nchimsi” that he applied to the background radiation came from a Sumerian goddess of future events also proved unfounded, with no such figure appearing in any authentic text from Sumer.

Sexton’s response was to compose a lengthy, rambling letter to the CJHEP defending his findings and accusing the Cambridge team of “petty jealousy.” He attempted to publish a follow-up paper, reporting data from experiments in his garage with a homemade apparatus and extending the timeframe of the “Nchimsi Background Radiation” to a scale detectable by humans. Every journal he submitted the new article to rejected it outright; Dr. Sexton eventually had it published by a vanity press at considerable expense.

His colleagues began to suspect that Sexton had undergone some kind of psychotic break, but he angrily refused to seek treatment and withdrew to his parents’ old home. Sexton continued to produce papers explaining how his discovery could predict the future, unlock the secrets of the universe, gift humanity with immortality, and more. He had them printed and mailed to libraries and academics, a practice that steadily drained his funds.

Sexton’s emaciated body was discovered by a neighbor not long after his 50th birthday; he had apparently starved to death after running out of food and money and refusing to leave his home in search of either. In what the coroner remarked as a fascinating coincidence, Sexton was found near his “Nchimi detector” with a scrawled note in his hand, which happened to be the same as a banner headline from the next morning, announcing his death.

There was pandemonium in the waiting area between the stages; band members, roadies, burly security personnel, and every species of stoner known to man mingled in a gigantic mob.

“I’m here to see Dinky Gazebo. I’ve been a huge fan of theirs since they got their start in a Cascadia college bar!”

“Woo! Garbage Mashers on the Detention level for life! I have all their albums and bootlegs and bootleg albums and albumen bootlegs!”

“Does anyone know when Bad Pastel Paintings plays its first set?”

“Where’s Stage D? 10-Hour Flight Delay was moved there and they start in 10 minutes!”

“Yeah! Best Don’t Eat the Lobster concert ever! Even better than the 2010 tour!”

It’s never a good sign when a client wants to meet you in an alleyway instead of your office. Granted, the average alleyway smells a bit better than my office and lets in less water when it rains. But the clients always want their suspicions to be alley’d, and I oblige; for my part, I think they’ve seen too many detective movies. I know I have; it’s where we both get our expectations for dress and the proper hardboiled tone for narration.

Evryali the Gorgon was waiting for me in the alley next to my office, her back turned, protected from the rain by a cheap paper parasol from Chinatown. “Your message said you had acquired it,” she hissed. “Let me see.”

I pulled out an old wooden crate–it’d held my last factory order of Lil’ Devil brand snack cakes– and dropped the small, wet packet on it, opening it to reveal the small but highly poisonous snake that had sent me to the emergency room three times and the toilet seventeen times since my halfling “brother” Mungle Snuh had surrendered it under duress of having his feast ruined by a torrent of sewage.

“I’m gonna bite you again, you know,” the snake said. “Even if you are bringing me back to my mistress. It’s just what I do.”

“You just do whatever you have to do,” I said. Sure enough, the tiny snake rose up and sank his teeth deeply into the iron knights’ gauntlet I was wearing, a late borrowing from Gilberte the Small, Knight Errant of 57th Street. The snake cried out in pain and recoiled.

“That’s him, all right.” Evryali turned and approached me, an envelope in her hands. “And here is our agreed-upon fee.”

I reached out to take it, but the snake interrupted my train of thought (money money money or something along those lines) with a startled squawk: “That’s not my mistress! What’re you trying to pull?”

I looked up, surprised. I should have known something was up; statistical analysis shows that 2/3 of my clients try to double-cross me (with the remaining third just settling for skipping out on the bill).

“Too bad you had to open your scaly mouth,” Evryali purred. She grasped her shades, ready to pull them down.

For my part, my anti-Gorgon shades were still with Chang’s Dry Cleaning and Pressing, so I pulled out my gun. I tried to, anyhow; it’s hard to handle a gun made for human hands, even human children’s hands, as a halfling. I dropped the gun instead, and it went off with a crack, with the .22 caliber bullet (hey, it’s the biggest round I can manage, recoilwise) ricocheted harmlessly off Evryali’s normal-looking but subtly armored skin. She laughed, and exposed her blood-red eyes.

Luckily for me, petrification isn’t instant death. As long as your ‘statue’ is intact, anyone with a little mandrake juice or harpy tear salve can being you back. In fact there are roving freelance gangs who do just that, picking up statues and holding them for “safekeeping” while relatives scrape together the cash for a de-petrification. That was the next thing I saw: a cigar-chomping satyr in suspenders and wifebeater, de-petrifying my face (and only my face) so I could arrange to buy my way into a full de-petrification.

If approached, the Greenhouse Spirit will sometimes deign to carry on a short conversation rather than vanishing. The groundskeepers affectionately call her “Greenie” and appreciated the lack of malice or melancholy she displayed, in sharp contrast to the other spirits roaming the grounds.

When she appears, the Spirit will fill the greenhouse with spectral plants and flowers, though whether these are the spirits of actual flowers or a manifestation of Greenie herself is a matter of some debate. She herself appears to be a young woman, solidly in the 16-26 age range, but as spirits’ appearances do not always reflect their appearance in life no one has been able to discern any biographical details, and the Spirit declines to provide them.

She will, instead, extol the values of her current garden, which neither ages nor dies, and maintain that only as a spirit could she work with such plants.

“Marcus,” said Dr. Vayer. “I’d like to have a word with you about the…item…on your desk.”

The graduate student turned his chair around, bumping his knees against the wall of his tiny shared office. “Yeah, isn’t it great?” he gushed. “It’s a limited-edition import. I got the last one they had online at Chibi-Go-Lucky, number 498 out of 500! It’s Shiraishi Noriko from Explosive Ice Force Pagan-5 in her Ultimate Aquatic Combat Goddess form.”

Vayer looked at the statuette, which took up most of the top of the office’s only file cabinet. It depicted a girl, pale to the point of near-translucency, with forests of suckered tentacles where each of her limbs ought to be and wearing nothing but a tiara. The squishy pseudopods were…well, “very busy” was the tamest euphemism that suggested itself. “We’ve had some…complaints…about it,” Vayer said. “Mostly from the female graduate students.”

“I can understand why they’d be jealous,” Marcus beamed. “You can’t get these anymore, and Shiraishi Noriko sets a standard of sensual purity that it’s hard for any woman to live up to.”

His graduate advisor cleared his throat. “That’s one way to approach it, I suppose,” he muttered. “Would you mind taking it home?”

“Not a chance,” Marcus beamed. “It’s such a rarity that I want to share it with the world and my fellow students who weren’t fortunate enough to get one.”

For a long time, scientists had said that the chances of detecting an alien civilization through its transmissions was vanishingly small. Unless they were close by, there was a lot of room for an onmidirectional signal to degrade, to say nothing of the increasing move on our part (and, presumably, that of similar civilizations) to sophisticated broadband. In essence, an alien civilization would transmit signals we could pick up only for a short span of their development–we could only pick them up if we were nearby and at the same level or greater.

A lot of sober minds maintained that position, feeling that SETI and the like was just an expensive PR project.

At least until the first signals from Luyten 726-8 were detected, that is.

Naturally, a tight lid was clamped on them at SETI and NASA–ostensibly for verification, in reality to prevent mass panic and hysteria. Detailed analysis revealed that the aliens’ transmissions occupied a different portion of the electromagnetic spectrum than ours did, requiring quite a bit of work to make the images and sounds comprehensible to humans.

The aliens appeared to be most similar to certain Cambrian fossils on Earth, implying perhaps a similar environment and convergent evolution. Their size was difficult to judge, but they seemed to be bilaterally symmetrical with odd numbers of appendages–five eyes or eye-like structures, a single motile proboscis, and either three, five, or seven legs. Smaller creatures seemed to have fewer, implying that they added segments as they aged. They assumed a squat posture not unlike beetles when moving and rose upright to manipulate with proboscis (and sometimes grip with available legs). A mouth with bizarre interlocking teeth not unlike an anomalocarid was present, but noise seemed to come from gill-like sphincters on either side of the “head.”

Linguists and anthropologists puzzled over the transmissions; they seemed to mostly be informative news broadcasts, depicting bizzare rituals, technologies, and often a single alien communication with its audience through a mixture of sounds and manipulating its eyes and proboscis. A strong central government, perhaps, broadcasting propaganda, at least in the time frame that the messages were sent. Analysis was just getting started when there was a final burst of transmissions arriving at Earth and then only static.

The content of the final messages? Panicked aliens broadcasting horrifying images of fire descending from the sky.

Colonel Tsuyoski Sato was not personally enthusiastic about the annexation of Taiwan. He agreed with his old superior, Count Gotō, that the Taiwanese (especially the aborigines) were too different biologically speaking from the Japanese and could never be assimilated, only ruled like the British did their subjects in Africa and India. Frankly, Col. Sato would rather the Empire focused its energies elsewhere.

But his superior, General Nakano, agreed with Minister Takashi in Tokyo that the Taiwanese could and should become Japanese in time. Dismissing Gotō as “an overgrown Boy Scout,” Nakano had personally appointed Sato to his post in the mountains. Sato was to be, as the General put it, the “big stick” opposite the “soft-speaking” civilian administrators (the man was an admirer of President Roosevelt).

Sato accepted the post and the mission, and moved his family to the area from Taipei, out of loyalty to the Emperor. He felt that above all it was necessary to show his sons how a man of honor behaved. His eldest son, Masashi, was studying biology and chemistry at Tokyo Imperial University; Sato hoped that he would lend those talents to the Imperial military upon graduation. The younger boy, Ryuji, was still at home and in his father’s eyes remained an impressionable dilettante of a dreamer. A stern example was needed to toughen him up and wean him off the steady diet of novels stories he was always buried in.

Perhaps that is why, after months of work in town, Col. Sato took Ryuji with him when he embarked on a minor punitive expedition. Aborigines and rebel bandits were using an old shrine in the mountains as a base, according to his informants, and Sato was determined to root them out and destroy their sanctuary.

Perhaps that is also why he did not return.

As with any form of human expression, graffiti has undergone the full spectrum of reactions from proscription to embrace by the avant-garde. From the crude tags put up by amateur vandals to the sophisticated pictures that enthusiasts proclaim as “street art,” it is in the public eye as never before. Once might even argue that, with the international success and recognition of graffiti artists like Banksy and Invader, that the form has become respectable, even passé.

Well, it’s at least as true that whenever a form of human expression seems to have said all it can say, when it’s become too comfortable, someone will shake it up.

Urban explorers poking through Detroit’s Michigan Central Station found a sumptuous graffiti tableaux featuring an infant held in an unfolding flower bud. Text ringed it like a picture frame: they were born into a world overgrown/of crumbled walls the rats called home/but beauty springs from any soil/of its own but often with toil. Next to it was another painting, this one an almost photo-realistic picture of a blank wall in a decaying building.

The explorers, struck by what they saw, documented the find online and appealed for help in identifying the location. They soon established that it was the nearby Roosevelt Warehouse, also in Detroit; upon locating the wall depicted in the previous graffiti, they found it bedecked with another painting. This one depicted a small child of ambiguous gender and race wandering through weed-choked ruins and beholding a luminous golden keyhole bedecked with jewels and, impossibly, golden wings.

Its accompanying text: potential is there, in they and you and me/all that’s needed to unlock is the key/but though we know where the keyhole be found/where might a key be when falsehoods abound.

Another near-photographic scene accompanied it, a breadcrumb to the next stage of the story. Before long, the secret had spread well beyond the tiny community of urban explorers in Detroit to encompass a website, where enthusiasts cataloged the location of each new stage of the story and collaborated to decipher the clues as to the next location of the art.

All this independent of the artist, who remained anonymous and unnamed. By the apparent conclusion of their first “story,” fans had taken to calling the artist Breadcrumbs.

The thing a lot of people don’t realize is that the skills available to a person are directly impacted by the contents of their day to day world. In the old days, the natural life energy that flows forth from the Divine Source might have graced a lucky Greek warrior with strength or high-invulnerability. The Chinese occasionally found their entreaties for ten thousand years of life at least partially granted, and magicians were able to call on at least some of the cantrips that are now associated with them in legend.

But today? Living in a consumer society with disposable income? The gifts that flow from the Divine Source reflect that environment. Gifts like miraculous extra mileage in an SUV, the occasional 500-calorie chocolate bar that registers as zero, and an intrinsic field that causes iPhones to lose their charge.

And then there’s Alethia Bussel’s gift: sodamancy.

She could manipulate any carbonated beverage, with the degree of control varying by how carbonated it was. Full bottles of soda pop could be levitated and manipulated, while flat Coke could only be coaxed to dance a little bit. She could also cause soda to instantly release all its carbon dioxide, shattering its container, or instantly cause painful gastrointestinal swelling (or monstrous belching) in anyone who’d recently imbibed the stuff.

Her favorite trick, though, was to take control of the stream that issued forth when you dropped a Mentos into soda. Soda dancing was perhaps the only joy Alethia got from her otherwise bothersome gift.

Then again, that was before the Agnates launched their secret campaign against everyone with a gift from the Divine Source…
