The first one was irksome
The second did annoy
Then a third one did come
And a fourth was ahoy

Lizard they were, lizards all
Skink and gecko, plain and striped
Young and old, monitor and anole
In her bedroom and in her hall

She threw them outside, shooed them away
Sealed up the windows, locked up the door
But in every nook, every cranny they stay
And every day there arrived still more

In time did she ask, “what want you with me?”
And to her surprise, a reply did recieve
“You are our queen and this is homage, you see,”
“We want you to join us and of here take leave.”

So it was then that vanish did she
Searches were futile, no trace did they find
Though locals still swear they see
A large regal lizard, best of all its kind

For theirs was a city
Build from staples and paper
But even at its coolest
Its cleanest
Its most paved
They were there
In the gutters
In the furrows
Beneath floorboards
Behind walls
Listening
Watching
Waiting
Probing for weaknesses
And every piece of information
Every chink in the armor
Borne on scurrying legs
Borne on owls’ silent wings
To the great king
Whose domain they had displaces
Who waited on silent throne
To reclaim what was once his
And would be soon again

May fancy in her dancing hours
Strew your lives with glowing flowers.
And after many storied springs
Have fled on time’s all-bearing wings,
May your bond be strong as ever
Spun golden threads that none can sever.

Everything in the green potato is tentacles
Our unripe tuber bulwark against the unknown darkness
The starch quickly subsumes all of the noxious chemicals
Belched forth in evil from many a blasphemous carcass

Fighting for the man beside us
Seen through gas-mask lenses
Through phosgene clouds
Advancing silhouettes

Rifle’s jammed, a club only
Too long and heavy anyway
When death’s at arm’s length
Or from above, a thunderbolt

I grapple with my enemy
Hand to hand, war to the knife
Fumbling in chemical twilight
Blades though both our chests

Now-useless masks come off
Red foam on uniforms, lips
We clasp trembling hands
Enemies waiting for the end

In my garden I grow fresh hours
As others might grow verdant flowers
I harvest fresh bouquets of seconds
To hang about as summer beckons
My minutes are coming in a bit small
Ground cuckoo fertilizer to make them tall
Though you say my garden is a waste of my time
I’ll keep my precious moments in green and rhyme

If I had but known
The secrets of the universe
Were revealed in a beaten
Paperback book

I would have been
Less of a hardcover snob
All these weary long years
In the wilderness

If you find it yourself
You will know the sign
When the words dance
At the roar of distant water
